Q: Bad Breath, Throat always dry, always swallowing, feels like something is stuck in my throat, What is wrong?
I had GERD and was on rabeprazole medication for 3 months and it went away but I am having the same throat symptoms. I think it may be allergies or post nasal drip but I am not sure. Does anyone out there have this?

A: Even though you may not have heartburn, it is entirely possible (even probable) that the GERD is rearing its ugly head again.
The muscles at the top of the esophagus clamp shut in order to protect the airway from the reflux and give the sensation of having a lump, or something stuck, in the throat.
The bad breath is very likely due to stomach acid making its way up to your throat when you sleep.
You are always swallowing because a small bolus (the amount is less than a tsp) of saliva isn’t enough material to get those tight upper esophageal muscles to relax enough for it to pass through. I’m sure it must be a problem swallowing firm foods like bread and meat. Large boluses (gulps) of liquid are typically the easiest to swallow when GERD is present.
Go back on the medicine. If you don’t have the prescription, you can always try one of the over-the-counter medicines Pepcid, Prilosec, or Zantac.
Google “reflux precautions” to find out more.

Q: how long until my medication takes effect?
I take prevacid for GERD. This is my third medication…I used to take rabeprazole (pariet) and then I took nexium. both worked at first, and then stopped working. the prevacid worked at first and has stopped working also. my doctor and pharmacist told me I can double the dosage…so I’m wondering how long I should wait before I decide that this doesn’t work either.

the only symptom I am experiencing while ON the medication is an altered sense of taste. everything I eat tastes like it’s gone bad. it’s making me miserable to say the least as I love food and I am hungry!

when I am not on medication or sometimes when medication just doesn’t work my other symptoms are: a jabbing/tender feeling in my neck, a burning throat, a sour taste in my mouth chest & back pain.

it’s been over a year of this crap off and on and I’m getting pretty weary. so any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

A: Treating GERD is often a crapshoot, meaning medication changes/adjustments may be necessary until you get the right drug/dosage that provides relief. If your doctor said you could double the dose, try it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Doctors prefer to try non-invasive treatment if at all possible as surgical intervention carries its own set of risks and may not relieve the symptoms in some cases.

I know how you feel. I have GERD and various medications were tried until I finally had success with Prevacid.

Q: Is it normal that my ALT test was 120 after being intoxicated by food and medication at the ER?
Hi, I went to the ER thinking i was having a heart attack, but it turn out that it was not. Aparently, I ate raw oyster, raw tuna and 4 glasses of vodka, and i was taking Pariet, Rabeprazole sodium, which is medicine for ulcers in my stomach and i just started to take it this week. I also taking vitamins and diet pils. My alt was 120, so the doctors now is having me had a second test. Does my doctor think i might have hepatitis? i dont think i ever been expose, could you tell me more

A: If your ALT and/or AST are above 30, you have hepatitis. It might not be A, B, or C. It could be drug induced or autoimmune so you wouldn’t have ever been exposed to it. The doctor can do a test to tell you what kind it is but it may take a while to figure out for sure but you definitely have it. Those kind of levels are not normal. My best advice is stay off all drugs, vitamins, diet pills, alcohol, or anything else that has to be processed through the liver until they get it tested. You can look on wikipedia to get more information about different kinds of hepatitis. Don’t mess around with the liver, it’s very important and can cause a lot of problems if it’s damaged.

Q: GERD sufferers or medical experts? I need help!?
I am 30 years old and I have chronic acid regurgitation. I don’t really have heartburn. My first symptom was neck pain, followed by a burning throat (I didn’t realize at the time that the two were related, but the neck pain seems to correlate with the other symptoms). I was prescribed rabeprazole which made everything better really quickly. Then I stopped taking the medication only to have my symptoms return immediately along with a new symptom: a HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE taste in my mouth. When I resumed taking the medication however, all my symptoms went away again.

Then a few months later, the horrible taste returned and this time I didn’t think it was the acid regurgitation, because it wasn’t accompanied by a sore throat and the doctor sent me to the dentist (my teeth and mouth were perfect), and then for a sinus x-ray (all fine)…and THEN he prescribed Nexium. The nexium made me feel better again.

Now it’s been about 8 weeks and the horrible taste has returned. The Nexium is twice the dosage as the rabeprazole was, and as far as I know it’s pretty much the same thing. My doctor has now prescribed prevacid for me to take, but I’m pretty discouraged at this point. It’s beginning to look as though everything is just going to stop working. Maybe this means there’s something else going on? I don’t know what to do…my doctor seems unconcerned. Anybody else have this problem or know anything about it?

A: if nexium hasnt worked you should have a gastroscope really
