What is gastroesophageal reflux (GER)?
Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) occurs when stomach contents reflux, or back up, into the esophagus during or after a meal. The esophagus is the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. A ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus opens and closes to allow food to enter the stomach. This ring of muscle is called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES normally opens to release gas after meals. With infants, when the LES opens, stomach contents often reflux into the esophagus and out the mouth, resulting in regurgitation, or spitting up, and vomiting. GER can also occur when babies cough, cry, or strain.

What are the symptoms of GER?
GER is common in healthy infants. More than half of all babies experience reflux in the first 3 months of life, but most stop spitting up between the ages of 12 to 24 months. Only a small number of infants have severe symptoms. An infant with GER may experience
spitting up
vomiting
coughing
irritability
poor feeding
blood in the stools
In a small number of babies, GER results in symptoms that cause concern. These symptoms include
poor growth due to an inability to hold down enough food
irritability or refusing to feed due to pain
blood loss from acid burning the esophagus
breathing problems
These problems can be caused by disorders other than GER. Your health care provider will need to determine whether GER is the cause of your child’s symptoms
Q: How long does acid reflux symptoms last?
I have a lot of excess saliva that I swallow at least every minute and that causes me to burp a lot. The burps are very small and mainly gassy. Any help?
A: I am not sure I understand your question. Acid reflux is a condition where acid from the stomach goes up the esophagus. Are you saying that you have an excessive amount of saliva that you swallow because of an acidic sensation in your throat? To answer the stated question, without treatment the symptoms of acid reflux usually only get worse with time, they don’t go away on there own.
Q: Quick cure for acid reflux symptoms?
I have acid reflux but some times run out of priloce is there any at home quik remedies?
A: I have the same problem. Sorry man. Prilosec is the best thing I’ve found yet. If you have some Tums or Rolaids around they work for an hour or so at a time. A glass of milk helps for maybe an hour, but just a little.
Q: How can I have acid reflux and have no symptoms?
I recently had an Upper GI and was told I have acid reflux but I don’t have any symptoms. I’ve had heartburn occasionally…once in a blue moon kinda thing. Should I start taking something for it?
A: I’m going through the exact same thing right now actually. I’ve been having acid reflux and not knowing it. I went to the doctors and my doctor told me that the acid from my stomach was actually making the back of my throat peel. Gaviscon works really well with heartburn.
Q: What are the symptoms of Acid Reflux?
What are the symptoms of Acid Reflux?
A: Basically, painful heartburn, which can occur at any time, but many people suffer it when lying down at night.
Symptoms can differ; but mainly consist of nausea/sickness, burning pain (heartburn), especially after meals or on lying down. Sometimes relief from the pain is only obtained by making oneself sick.
If you suspect you have this, then visit your doctor as soon as you can. It is easily cured, unless you are taking tablets which may cause this as a side-effect.
Q: What are acid reflux symptoms?
I have been experiencing chest pains on and off after drink or eating curtain foods and beverages I also get a burn sore throat filling in my throat. I feel boated and light head and sometimes dizzy. Could this be acid reflux?
A: Some of the symptoms of Acid Reflux are heartburn, chest pain, difficulty in swallowing and regurgitation (bringing food back up into the mouth).
It can last several months or longer if not treated. Drug treatment is often only needed for a short time although it may have to be repeated since some symptoms may re-occur.
I would say make a doctor appointment just to be safe.
Q: Does anyone know the symptoms of acid reflux?
i have been to the docter and he didnt know what it was? But i think its acid reflux. what are the symptoms of acid reflux?
A: sure i had it, The first and more noticeable symptom is the heartburn. You wake up in the middle of the night with a terrible burning sensation that starts by your upper stomach and can even reach your throrat. You can also develop a hiatal hernia, which means that the valve that keep the hydrochloric acid into the stomach is defective due to the same action of the acid and then there is a discomfort right where the ribs cage opens to the stomach. If you suspect that you suffer acid reflux there is something you can do to test (out of the gastroscopy test), put 1 or 2 inches high bricks underneath the upper side of your bed, in order for your body to sleep in an angle. The gravity will keep the acid in your stomach and you will feel immediate relief. You will wake up fresh and happy, then you know what you were missing. I was treated of hiatal hernia and reflux, got over it tks to this little advice my doc gave me.. opps i forgot something , antiacids are to be used only under pain to avoid extra burning of tissue during a crisis but not as treatment!!!! inhibitors of the proton pump are the right choice, but the bricks are the best! good luck
Q: Is it okay to drink apple and/or cranberry juice with acid reflux symptoms?
A: Once you’re symptoms are resolved it’s okay to eat or drink anything in moderation. You should avoid too much of certain foods and drinks and never eat within 2 hours of bedtime if you have problems with acid reflux. If you are getting acid reflux frequently you could look at starting a proton pump inhibitor like prilisec or omeprazole and see a doctor.

i was diagnosed with acid reflux, at first i thought it was something serious every month i get ecg and xray and all came out normal, i did that because of chestpain and sometimes a little heaviness on the left arm, anyway im only 25 years old and a filipina, and i thing acid reflux is not talked about much in my country thats why im keep on posting here aboiut my symptoms. im a hypochondriac and one of my doctors said that i should forget being anxious about this acid reflux and its symptoms, is acid reflux really like that, i mean it scares me evrytime i feel chestpain and eventhough i know that im ok, it really scares me, and im tired of being scared about it, i was relieved in a month , but 4 days ago, i got aLBM and it came back, the symptoms came back, how i wish i could rest my mind again from all these worries, please help do you also get this symptoms?

Q: Can someone tell me what is the symptoms for acid reflux ?
My sister is having a constant pain in her ears and her throat is swollen she sometimes burst into a dry cough . Her doctor said it is acid reflux he put her on antibiotics , she took it for two weeks she has seen very little results .
A: The symptoms of acid reflux are primarily heartburn, regurgitation, and nausea
The main symptoms are persistent heartburn and acid regurgitation. Some people have GERD without heartburn. Instead, they experience pain in the chest, hoarseness in the morning, or trouble swallowing. You may feel like you have food stuck in your throat or like you are choking or your throat is tight. GERD can also cause a dry cough and bad breath.
i have acid reflux too i am using the purple pill nexum
Q: I have a hiatal hernia without reflux symptoms.?
The symptoms that I have are really annoying, such as jitterness, shallow breathing, heart palpitations, pain in my upper back and shoulders. It’s really hard living like this everyday not knowing what I can do to relieve the pressure. Any suggestions???
A: CONSULT GASTRO-ENTEROLOGIST
Q: Are these symptoms from a viral infection or from acid reflux?
I have been getting dull upper back and chest aches and my chest, back and neck feel tight. I also sometimes feel like I’m taking in too much air like a panic attack, but different. Aside from this, I have been feeling my usual acid in the esophagus, bloated feeling. I’m confused as to whether it is a flu or cold or not because last night I had a slight fever? Is anyone else getting these symptoms? Any doctors on here that can tell me if this sounds more like a viral infection or acid reflux?
A: Your symptoms seem GERD. The main symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) include:
Persistent heartburn. Heartburn is an uncomfortable feeling or burning pain behind the breastbone. It may occur after eating, soon after lying down, or when bending forward. Nonprescription medicines that reduce or block acid may relieve the pain. These include antacids (for example, Tums), H2 blockers (for example, Pepcid), and proton pump inhibitors (for example, Prilosec OTC). Heartburn caused by GERD is usually felt within 2 hours after eating. If your heartburn lasts for several hours—for example, all night—you may have severe GERD.2
A sour or bitter taste in the mouth. The backflow of stomach acid and juices into the esophagus may be severe enough to cause a sour or bitter taste in your mouth. This often occurs along with heartburn, but in some cases it may be your only symptom.
If these symptoms occur more than twice a week, you may have GERD. Many people have occasional heartburn or a sour taste in the mouth. These instances are not considered to be GERD.
Some people have GERD without heartburn. Other symptoms of GERD can include:
Chest pain. This may be a dull, heavy discomfort that spreads across the chest. This chest pain may occur with heartburn and may be confused with the pain of a heart attack. For more information on chest pain and heart attack, see the topic Chest Pain.
Hoarseness.
Trouble swallowing. This is more common with advanced GERD.
A feeling that you have something stuck in your throat.
A cough.
Having extra saliva (this is called water brash).
Nausea.
There are many other conditions with symptoms similar to GERD, such as peptic ulcer disease or an infection of the esophagus.
Q: Can you tell me your gerd or acid reflux symptoms?
im having pain etc in different places my drs says its reflux but im not sure…
A: I would experience a burning pain in my stomach (quite high-up) and I would often have reflux after eating (i.e. tasting food after & burning throat) and when I went to bed (I slept with my bed on a slant slant to stop it).
I started taking Zantac, prescription, it helped a lot. I also use Gaviscon (over the counter) when i go to bed to keep my acid levels down.
Hope this helps

Q: Doesanyone have laryngopharyngeal reflux? what were your symptoms and long did they take to go away?
I feel like I have food stuck in my throat when I eat solids. It started out with a potato chip. My ENT says I have GERD with Laryngopharyngeal Reflux. I’ve been on Prevacid twice a day and Pepcid Complete with very little relief. I have been on mashed potatoes and pudding and just liquids for 2 weeks. The nurse says I CAN eat solids with no problem that it’s just that I’ve built up fear to eat. Yeah I do have fear to eat; however I am also eager to eat! I’d rather eat mashed potatoes than to feel like I have something stuck in my throat. It feels like it’s stuck on the left side of my throat. The ENT looked down my throat with a mirror and said my esophagus and vocal cords were very irritated-2wks ago. If anyone has had this problem please help.
A: I’ve had GERD for years. Sometimes I couldn’t even drink water; it felt like it was gurgling in my throat. Prevacid, tagamet, and Pepsid never worked for me. I found the best thing that works for me is Prilosec; Protonix is very good, too.I was always told to nibble and eat very light all day; which really helps. If you eat a heavy meal, you’ll definately get sick. And, yes, I have been very scared to eat many many times.
Q: Which painkillers are suitable for relieving symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux?
Already tried PPIs (more than 6 months) and raising the bed head. Just had a big setback and throat is now incredibly sore all the time.
Used to take lots of Gaviscon Advance (UK version), didn’t seem to make much difference.
A: You are not going to help much with painkillers. Have you tried adding large doses of Gaviscon to the PPIs?
If this fails you might need to discuss surgical options.
