Q: drinking with medication?
so every morning i take medication and i was wondering if its ok to drink with it since i did take it like 10 hours ago. they are
-mercaptopurine
-asacol
-entocort
-nexium
-and benadryll

i rarely drinking so this is the first time im drinking with these meds and probally the last. i just want to know what will happen if i do mix them.and i probally wont be drinking alot anyways

A: the only drug interactions between all these medications and alcohol is the benadryll, and of course it will make you dizzy and sedate. as llong as you take the benadryll in the morning, and drink later in the evening, you should be ok

Q: Lymphocytic Colitis in children?
My eight year old son’s GI doctor called today with the results of his biopsy today and the diagnosis is Lymphocytic Colitis. Obviously, i have been searching the web like crazy ever since. He is currently not having the severe diarrhea that he was, so they decided not to prescribe medication at the moment. They said if it starts up again, to call them and they would make a prescription for Entocort. I can find very little information about this disease as it relates to children. I am hoping someone can help me with a few questions:

1. How common is this in children?
2. What are the side effects of Entocort, especially for children?
3. He is already on a restricted diet and takes aloe vera juice, is there anything else that we can do to calm symptoms/keep him in remission other than drugs?
4. Is this a life long condition?

A: Gina B – Try a search for lymphocytic colitis or lymphocytic enterocolitis, forms of inflammatory bowel disease, sometimes associated with autism.

Steroids, including budesonide (Entocort) and prednisone are also used to reduce inflammation. Steroids are usually only used to control a sudden attack of diarrhea. Long-term use of steroids is avoided because of side effects such as bone loss and high blood pressure.

Q: Does this sound like a perianal abscess?
Hello, I was told i had crohns’s Disease over a year ago and since then have lost a lot of weight. I can’t really get to my doctor like I should because I have 5 kids and nobody to help me. I have been on Entocort EC (9mg) since january and Asacol (on and off)

Well, the thing is that I have a lot of hemorrhoids (inside and out). I always got them when I was pregnant but since my last child who is 3 they have not gone away. Sometimes they aren’t painful but they are still there. I always have lose bowels and haven’t had a formed one in about 2 years. Anyway my concern is that I went to the bathroom which is pretty much always painful because of the hemorrhoids and I was cleaning myself and applying a cold rag. I started to push around the area of the hemorrhoids and I felt something hard in between my rectum and tail bone towards the right side. I pressed on the left side in the same spot to see if it was just something on the inside that is normal but didn’t feel anything on that side so I pressed on the right side again. It feels pretty large and there is some pain when I press. It is not bulging out and if I never started pushing around I would have never known it was there. I started to google about abscesses and read about the painful surgery to drain it. I have very bad anxiety and am freaking out now. I want to know if it’s possible to just ask the doctor for antibiotics and if it could pop and drain on it’s own? Like i mentioned at this time i do not have help with my kids and can’t go through the pain I read about when they drain it and I will never take pain medication that is stronger then Tylenol. I don’t like feeling funny and don’t want to become addicted to anything. Plus I have my kids I have to be alert for.

Is this something that I can just leave and it will resolve on it’s own if I take antibiotics until I can do something when I would have help with my kids. Sorry about any typo’s or if something doesn’t make sense but I am having really bad anxiety right now because of this.

***UPDATE***

I went to my GI doctor today and he tried to give me a rectal exam but I had to ask him to stop because of the pain. Like I mentioned, I have a lot of hemorrhoids on the outside (painful) and on the inside. I’m not sure if he was able to feel what I was complaining about. I showed him how it is draining in the pad that I had on. He took some blood and told me that he really needs to do a colonoscopy and i really need to find someone to watch the kids. That is going to be impossible till October so I don’t know what to do. He prescribed Flagel (metronidazole) 250 mg. 4 times a day. I am still having anxiety about what it can be and I was thinking if it was something very serious he would have sent me to the hospital but then I am thinking maybe because I am letting him know I don’t have anyone to watch my children that that’s the reason he didn’t send me. When I stand it feels like a throbbing headache and after going to the bahroom it hurts for a while but when I sit I am ok. He mentioned something about a fistula but from what I read it sounds like a abscess. Does anyone have any ideas or can assure me that i will be ok until I can let him look with the scope in Oct. I am having so much anxiety that I can;t eat and am losing weight from that now and not the crohn’s.

A: You need to find someone to watch your children for a couple of hours and someone that can drive you back and forth from the colonscopy. The problem might be a prolapsed rectum. This might be what you’re feeling and not an abscess. Either way, you need it cared for now, not in October. An abscess is full of infection and a prolapse caught early enough can be fixed without surgery. If either of these conditions get any worse before then you might end up in the hospital for days, and not hours. Your priority should be your children, but what happens when you can’t help them anymore? When mommy is sick the entire family suffers. The stress alone will and is eating at your health. You’re losing weight from too much anxiety related stress which weakens the immune system. You have 5 children that will suffer when mommy gets swine flu because her immune system was weak and 1 child came down with it, now the entire family has swine flu, what happens then? Please reevaluate your situation right now. A simple out patient procedure now can save you from allot more intense things going wrong later. Consider the children’s highest priority first YOU. Good luck and God Bless

Q: Crohn’s/IBD people….please help!?
K, so I’m new to all of this, and the doctor is recommending immunomodulators/6MP or anti-TNF. But I’ve been reading, especially on the CCFA website, that these are for more severe cases, that don’t respond to aminosalicylates. I don’t think it’s really that bad, since I just have some abdominal pain, but not the other symptoms of weight loss, running to the bathroom or whatnot. I am terrified of suppressing my immune system and running the risk of getting lymphoma…if my case isn’t that bad, I’d like to start from the ground up with aminosalicylates…but he says they’re like placebos. Is it ok to challenge the doctor with medication?? Are the 6-MP and anti-TNF for moderate to severe cases? Any thoughts? I’m currently on Entocort 9 mg and STILL have abdominal pain… :/ I’m scared….

thank you!
It is a specialist…actually a specialist in IBD, part of a team under a renowned Dr. that specializes in Crohn’s (Dr. Maria Abreu-have you heard of her?)

A: Yes it is OK to challenge the doctor about medication.!!! It’s your body.
That said, who is it suggesting this. Is it a specialist in Chron’s/IBD or is it a MD who dabbles in gastro intestinal stuff because he’s “interested.”
If it is a specialist, who’s well versed in the latest treatments, I’d be more inclined to listen to what he has to say.
If it’s not, I’d challenge it and ask for a referral to a specialist.

A: If it is a Perianal abscess you would want it treated via surgical drainage. These days the abscess is most likely caused by e-coli or mrsa in that region. I would have it checked, especially since those types of abscesses can burrow deeper as opposed ot working their way to the surface. Best of luck.

A: Sounds more like a hemorrhoid. I agree that abscesses are painful all the time, not just when pressed on. But certain hemorrhoids can also be painful much of the time. I also agree that you need to get someone to watch the kids so you can take care of yourself. Don’t under rate your own importance or continually put the needs of others ahead of your own. Check with your local church for help with this if you have no nearby relatives.

No it’s not possible to “just ask the doctor for antibiotics”. Whatever this turns out to be, it must be managed appropriately. FYI: You cannot become addicted to pain medications by having an incision and drainage. Get that out of your head right now. You would get only enough medication to get you through this and no more than that. And you wouldn’t be taking it long enough to become addicted. The bottom line is that no doctor can help you until this has been examined and evaluated.
