Q: Entocort side effects?
I’ve had Crohn’s disease for about two years now, and I just went in for a colonoscopy today and my doctor says that I am having a flare-up. Which is odd because I haven’t even shown any symptoms. I’m already taking Pentasa two times a day, but she prescribed Flagyl for the next two weeks, and also Entocort to help with the flare-up. The only other steroid I have taken was Prednisone and I took that for around 3 months and it was absolutely awful. It caused me to gain 50+ pounds, a moon face, and the worst breakout I’ve ever seen on anyone. My doctor assured me that Entocort isn’t as strong as the Prednisone and I won’t see the same side effects. But I’m still TERRIFIED of gaining a bunch of weight and breaking out horribly again. Has anyone taken this drug? Can you tell me your experiences with the side effects?
A: The side effects from Entocort are much less severe than Prednisone. Side effects like you had on Prednisone were certainly on the severe side. It certainly can happen like in your case, but you probably won’t experience anything quite like that on Entocort. They are related so to some degree you may notice a small weight gain or appetite among other things. It really depends on you and the dose you’re prescribed. One thing I can say for sure is that if you doctor is convinced you need corticosteroids like Entocort to treat your Crohn’s you should follow through. From personal experience (and you know this) you have to stay on top of your Crohn’s. You said you really weren’t experiencing a flare, but sometimes you feel “not great, but okay” and then bam! a flare hits. Some physicians are really good at telling when that is about to happen. Also this is because of something that she saw on the colonoscopy results. You didn’t feel it, but you could be about to really flare. Hopefully the combo of Flagyl and Entocort with your Pentasa can help calm things down a bit in your system.
